TutorMentor's Blog

Last Post 8 days Ago

I lead a non profit called Cabrini Connections, Tutor/Mentor Connection. I maintain a blog at http://tutormentor.blogspot.com and http://cabriniblog.blogspot.com.

I participate in forums like this to network and share ideas with people who don't know about the Tutor/Metor Connection. I hope that as you read my blog and visit the T/MC web sites, you'll see that we do have a blueprint for helping inner city kids stay safe in non-school hours and stay headed through school and into jobs and careers.

It's a strategy that can have many leaders. In fact, it won't succeed if it's only led by myself and my non profit. Leaders are needed from churches, businesses, colleges, hospitals, schools and neighborhood networks. If the private sector and individual citizens provide the type of leadershp we describe we can make a huge difference in the quality of life for all people in the Chicago region, and we can reduce the vice-like grip our elected leaders have over what happens in this and every other city of the country.

If you want change you must be the change.

Next Thursday and Friday I'm hosting a Tutor/Mentor Leadership and Networking Conference at Northwestern University Law School. The Web site is http://www.tutormentorconference.org

I encourage you to attend, or tell your friends and co-workers to attend. If you just come in the morning or during lunch hour for the keynote speakers there is no charge. We do need you to register.

Thanks Jim. I'm in Atlanta today for the National Conference on Volunteering and Community Service. One of the themes is "recruiting talent volunteers" which aims to recruit people and businesses to provide infrastructure support to non profits. This could be technology, human resources, marketing, etc. If provided on an on-going basis, it would really help tutor/mentor programs improve their impact all over the city.

If you can pass this message on, please do.

I have led a volunteer-based tutor/mentor program serving inner city youth in the Cabrini-Green area since 1975. I've also held various advertising jobs with the Montgomery Ward Corporation from 1973-1990. In 1990 I created a non profit to mentor Cabrini Green youth and in 1993 I created Cabrini Connections (http://www.cabriniconnec
tions.net) and the Tutor/Mentor Connection (http://www.tutormentorco
nnection.org ) The aim of Cabrini Connections is to build a non-school adult support network, where volunteers from diverse business background serve as tutors, mentors, coaches, leaders, advocates and friends, with a commitment to "do all we can" to help each teen who joins us when entering 7th grade be starting a job/career by age 25. The aim of the Tutor/Mentor Connection is more ambitious. We want to help programs like Cabrini Connections be available to k-12 youth in all high poverty areas in the Chicago region. We maintain a database listing more than 250 tutoring/mentoring organizations in the region and host this an a library of information about tutoring/mentoring and how to operate a non profit. We host a May and November conference intended to draw people together to share what they know. learn from others, and build collaborations that increase resources for all programs in Chicago. Through the Internet we connect with leaders of tutor/mentor programs in cities throughout the country and the rest of the world. Take a look at our sites and join us if you'd like to end poverty by building a more comprehensive support system for inner city kids. http://www.tutormentorcon
