Recently on an episode of Hispanics Today, I saw a story about NASA's Constellation Project. Looks like the government feels that there is a need to colonized the moon. The United States government plans on returning to the moon by the year 2020, and colonizing. From what I heard on that segment, the colonist will be staying on the moon for many years. My question is why does the government feel that there is a need to go to the moon and stay there? I would think that this would be a bit of a burden on U.S. taxpayers.
What would the government get out of colonized the moon? The government is just like a business. No one in his or her right mind plans on building a facility somewhere, without making a profit from it. I understand that NASA operates on money allocated from the U.S. government, and the Constellation project has a budget. But, why should the government spend money on going back to the moon and colonized it? When times are so tough these days, perhaps that money would be better spent elsewhere.
