After six weeks on a waiting list, I was able to make the big switch to a hybrid car last week and what a difference!   Already, I'm averaging about 40 miles to a gallon and can easily understand how hybrid drivers become "hypermilers".  I don't even mind sitting in traffic anymore because the car's not burning ANY gas!  It's quite a savings since I commute daily from the far northwest suburbs.

And now, the hybrid waiting list is about four months long.

Have any of you changed your driving routines due to the high gas prices?  How 'bout some tips on getting even more mileage?

No, we haven't changed from our 5 F-250's, and we are not about to start now.

We'll quit when the Earth has been depleted of all natural gases and oils.

Until then, happy motoring.

Screw Hybrids.

Actually Nancy, I am waiting for the fuel stations in Chicago to provide at least one Ethanol pump per station. (Did you know there isn’t ONE fuel station within Chicago or Cook County that carries or sells ethanol)? Then I am either going to have my Mazda converted to burn Ethanol, or, I will trade the Mazda in on an Ethanol capable vehicle. The problem is, I really love my Mazda and I don’t want to trade it in on a new vehicle just because it is Ethanol capable. I am fully in favor of hybrids, BUT, the problem with hybrids, they still depend on gasoline and need gasoline to run the internal combustion engine. With gasoline as endangered as it is, we need to start the switch from gasoline to hydrogen fuel cells, Ethanol or bio-diesel. I am a big advocate of Ethanol, hydrogen and bio-diesel capable vehicles and wish the auto manufacturers would produce and switch to Hydrogen fuel cells, Ethanol or bio-diesel capable vehicles. True, Chevrolet and Ford do make “Flex-Fuel” vehicles now, but, they weren’t as popular when I purchased my car and now I have to pay the price for Ford/Mazda’s decision.
Congratulations on your new vehicle and I hope you enjoy it. Did you buy the Toyota Camry or the Honda Civic?

Tracey, thank you for your thoughtful response. I couldn't wait around for any more advances in technology and alternate fuels to trickle down to us lowly consumers. I was filling-up 3 times a week with my old car (with premium)! Now I'm down to once a week. I'm impressed that you guessed what I likely got based on the mileage I mentioned. I went with the Toyota Camry after learning that Honda had leased the hybrid synergy system from Toyota. I agree that hybrids aren't the answer to our multi-tiered energy problems but they're a practical option for now.

I drive a lot less now. I'm considering buying a bike to ride for short trips.

It's my understanding that a hybrid car costs about $5000 more than it's non-hybrid counterpart. $5000 would pay for my gas for about 4 years. Also after a few years the hybrid will need it's batteries replaced which I'm told is a very expensive proposition. I just don't think the hybrids are a reasonable option at this time.

Nancy,
First off, you are my favorite on Fox. What a great personality. I watched a segment on Fox news last night about a day care that doesn't want a liquior store next door. I would like to know why people can come together to protest everything but the gas prices. We are all getting hit hard by the gas prices and our economy but we don't seem to be protesting it. Yet we can protest a liquior store next to a day care or remember when the city of Dolton wanted to limit beauty salons in their town. How crazy is that. What about these gas prices? When are we going to protest that? We can lobby to not have a childrens museum built in a neighborhood but we can't do anything about the gas prices. I agree if public transportation is an option we should use it but there should be more regulations around gas prices. I'm sorry, I just don't understand.

Hi Nancy, I think you are the best too!!! I live out in the boondocks and only drive 4 miles to work. I keep tire pressures at correct number and cars tuned up. We cut out any unnecessary trips. Have a great day!!
