Gov. Rod Blagojevich pardoned 26 people including four men who were wrongfully convicted.

Among those pardoned based on innocence was Luis Ortiz, a Hispanic man who spent five years in prison for the 1997 torture and murder of a 56 year-old furniture dealer in the Logan Square neighborhood.

Ortiz was exonerated in Dec. 2002 when federal investigators identified the real killers.

The governor's decision comes about a month after the advent of a new state legislation that allows those who have been wrongfully convicted to bypass the governor in seeking certificates of innocence.

El gobernador del estado de Illinois Rod Blagojevich perdonó a 26 personas, incluyendo a cuatro hombres que fueron convictos erróneamente por crímenes serios.

Entre esos hombres está, Luis Ortiz, un hispano que pasó cinco años en prisión por la tortura y el asesinato de un comerciante de muebles de 56 años de edad. El crimen ocurrió en 1997 en el vecindario de Logan Square en el norte de la ciudad.

According to FastLife.com, Chicago is the third most “dateable” city in the country. The site relied on the popularity of speed daters from different zip codes.

New York City and Washington D.C. earned the top two spots.

When only the zip codes are taken into consideration, the Lower West Side/Pilsen area takes top honor as America's most dateable neighborhood, according to a Fast Life release.

Según FastLife.com, Chicago es la tercer ciudad más “dateable” del país. Es decir, es la área metropolitana donde se encuentran más mujeres y hombres solteros interesados y dispuestos a salir en citas.

La Ciudad de Nueva York ocupa el primer lugar y Washington D.C. el segundo.

Latino parents -Adriana Barraza, Melva Nieves, Delilah Rivera, Mariza Santiago and Billy Burgos- joined a lawsuit to fight the "unequitable" distribution of funds that result in their children receiving substandard education at the state's public schools.

Their names were added to a Chicago Urban League suit against the State of Illinois and the Illinois Board of Education filed in Cook County in September. The parents are asking that the courts to find the state in violation of the Constitution and civil rights. They want to see a judge force the state to change the way that Illinois funds its schools.

Illinois relies on property taxes to provide money to elementaries and high schools. Consequently, poor and minority communities get less cash, disparately impacting African American and Latino kids, the suit alleges.

Ald. Manny Flores said that minority children right now are being told “'You don't have the right to new books or to be safe in school because you have a different skin color or because maybe you have a Latino surname or because you don't live in Winetka or Naperville or in other affluent communities'.”

“It's unfair and it's unjust,” he said.

Flores, and the Chicago Urban League were backed by a dozen community organizations, such as Universidad Popular, the Logan Square Neighborhood Association, Centro Sin Fronteras, the National Council of La Raza, the Puerto Rican Cultural Center, LUCHA, Association House, ASPIRA.

Padres y funcionarios hispanos avalan demanda

Varios padres de familia con hijos en escuelas publicas, se unieron a una acción legal para exigir que el Estado de Illinois dé a sus descendientes los mismos fondos para su educación que reciben los niños de comunidades adineradas.

Además de los padres, decenas de funcionarios públicos hispanos y representantes de organizaciones comunitarias, como la Asociación del Vecindario de Logan Square, la Universidad Popular, el Centro Sin Fronteras, el Centro Cultural Puertorriqueño y el Concejo Nacional de La Raza , anunciaron su apoyo a la querella.

El argumento detrás de la demanda es que debido a que Illinois distribuye fondos a los planteles educativos con el dinero obtenido de los impuestos a las propiedades, los barrios pobres y las minorías reciben menos financiamiento que las áreas más adineradas.

“Obviamente este no es un tema nuevo y ese es el problema”, dijo el Secretario Municipal de Chicago, Miguel del Valle.

Aunque no espera una solución rápida al problema ya que las cortes demoran años en llegar a una decisión, el Secretario Municipal de Chicago, Miguel del Valle, indicó que es necesario que la demanda avance porque de lo contrario no se hará nada.

“No confío en que la Legislatura haga esto por si sola. Como alguien que estuvo ahí durante 20 años, no confío en la Legislatura y no confío en el gobernador”, aseveró el puertorriqueño.

 ICE grants temporary stay to Mexican mother

Immigration authorities agreed to delay the deportation of an undocumented mother of six, after getting that request from U.S. Rep. Luis Gutierrez (D-Illlinois).

Francisca Lino, 41, was scheduled to be deported Tuesday but Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) decided to grant her a couple more weeks on the basis of humanitarian reason while they review her case.

Gutierrez told reporters that as soon as Congress reconvenes he will introduce a private bill on behalf of Lino.

Las autoridades migratorias accedieron a postergar la deportación de una indocumentada mexicana, madre de seis hijos, tras recibir un pedido de parte del congresista Luis Gutiérrez.

Francisca Lino, de 41 años, debía presentarse hoy para abandonar los Estados Unidos, pero la Oficina de Inmigración y Protección de Aduanas (ICE, en inglés) resolvió a último momento re examinar su caso y otorgarle unas semanas más de permanencia.

El congresista dijo a periodistas que tan pronto se reúna el Congreso presentará un proyecto de ley para auxiliar a la mujer.

Foreclosure evictions to resume Monday

Only a week after foreclosure evictions were suspended to protect tenants who had not been given sufficient notice to find another home, Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart took a step back and announced the measure will resume shortly.

According to the sheriff, officials from his office have been working with the courts to come up with safeguards that protect renters.

Judge Dorothy Kirie Kinnaird is ordering several steps be added to the mortgage foreclosure filing process, a news release from the sheriff's office said.

These new steps ensure that renters receive notice of the eviction process so that they get 120 days to find a new home, the release said.

Dart had suspended home evictions last week after encountering families, many with children or elderly in the home, that had no clue about the legal process against their landlords. In these cases, banks had notified the property owner, but had relied on the heriff's office to take care of the tenants, according to Dart.

Tan solo una semana después de que suspendieron los desalojos de viviendas con el fin de proteger a los inquilinos que han pagado su mensualidad debidamente, el Alguacil del Condado de Cook dio un paso atrás y anunció que la medida se reanudará.

Early voting off to a strong start

Thousands of Cook County residents cast their ballots on the first day of early voting, according to elections officials.

In Chicago, 11,735 citizens went to the polls --nearly three times the record for first-day early voting. In the suburbs, 7,689 ballots were cast.

"Normally, we don't see a number like this until the last four days of early voting," Chicago elections board spokesman James Allen told the Sun-Times. "Unlike past elections, we're seeing more activity at all of the outlying ward sites around the city. We have a steady procession of voters downtown, but this time, it's not all concentrated downtown."

Early voting continues through Oct. 30 at 43 suburban locations and 51 in the city.

Mergers planned to reduce city's budget deficit

Mayor Richard Daley is planning on consolidating several City Hall departments in an effort to reduce a $400 million budget deficit.

The move will eliminate 240 jobs, Daley said at a press conference.

"For months I’ve warned that we’re facing a national economic crisis and that Chicago’s economy was getting worse," Daley said.

Still, the city has always looked to better management of government before turning to taxpayers for more, he said.

Among the mayor's plans is the creation of a Department of Family and Support Services, which includes the departments of Human Services, Children and Youth Services, Senior Services, the individual training part of the Mayor’s Office of Workforce Development and the Plan to End Homelessness section of the Housing Department.

Daley implementa fusiones para reducir déficit

El alcalde Richard Daley anunció que consolidará varios departamentos de la ciudad con el fin de ahorrar dinero y empezar a llenar un bache de 400 millones de dólares en el presupuesto municipal del próximo año.

Sheriff: No more evictions as of today

Cook County Sheriff Tom Dart announced that his office won't be carrying out evictions as of today to protect tenants who live in a foreclosed property.

In a press conference held Wednesday, Dart said he's seen many cases in which families dutifully pay their rent, only to learn later that their landlord has fallen behind on mortgage payments and the building has gone into foreclosure.

While Dart acknowledged that carrying out evictions is part of his duty as sheriff, he said he must also ensure that justice is being met.

“We're just not going to evict innocent tenants. It stops today,” said Dart.

According to the Sheriff's office, in the last two years, the number of foreclosure evictions has almost tripled. Dart projects there will be more than 40,000 mortgage foreclosures filed by year's end.
