2010 is when AT&T projects the internet will reach full capacity. According to a blog on Yahoo! Tech, AT&T is reporting "that without substantial investment in network infrastructure, the Internet will essentially run out of bandwidth in just two short years." Apparently the big tele companies have let the infrastructure erode in such a manner that a major revamp will have to be done or, bye-bye internet.

This brings up a few questions. As you may know, Net Neutrality has been under fierce debate. In short, it strives to fight restrictions that the major tele companies (including AT&T) have openly stated want in place. Just a quick factoid...The United States is already far behind most of the industrialized nation when it comes to broadband speed. Here is a bar graph comparison of Broadband speeds.

Could this be a calculated ploy to stifle Net Neutrality? Many people are wondering why the tele companies waited (much like oil companies) until it was uncomfortably late to start reinvesting into the network infrastructure. One thing is for sure, the United States major cable / tele companies have fallen far behind what it should be. Maybe they seriously didn't see this "internet doom" coming but; I can see why people are suspicious of AT&T's recent internet-doom cries. Honestly, are we really to believe the internet will not be here in two short years? I don't buy into it at all. The economy now relies on a functioning internet and I strongly doubt we would just let it collapse. So, why is AT&T blowing this air and more importantly why now? You make the call.
