Greetings all:

Just a note on our story tonight about the 19-year-old girl stuck in Mexico.

I am fortunate to be the daughter of parents who came to this country from other countries and always played by the rules. But I cannot imagine the heartbreak and disorientation of being separated from my family, and being forced to stay in a country that was for all intents and purposes a foreign country.

Should the sins of the parent be visited upon the child? In this case both parents are legal United States residents...the father is a U-S born citizen who adopted the girl when she was 8...the mother applied for and was granted U.S. citizenship in 2002.

There are tens of thousands of young people caught in a similar legal limbo...they came here illegally so young they don't even speak their parents' native language. Most of them don't realize they are in trouble until they try to get their driver's permits. Others are unable to continue on to college because they lack legal documentation.

Should we just abandon an entire generation of immigrant kids? Should we ship them back to countries they never knew, to people they don't even recognize? I know many of you feel that's exactly what we should do...but my heart says it's much too harsh a solution to a situation in which they had they had no choice.

I guess life is like that...luck of the draw.

Regards,

Lilia

Why do you guys (Fox) do this? You know there's other issues in this case and it's not so cut and dry.

1. The mother came here illegally, with the daughter. They're both here against the law.

2. How does the father adopt a child, with no birth certificate??? This in itself wreaks of being "unlawful"!

3. How did the mother gain citizenship in the first place, when she admitted to being here illegally?

4. Who's the attorney who put this whole shady deal together for them, and how much did he charge them for this?

5. You're absolutely right that it is heartbreaking, Lilia! It's heartbreaking that any mother, would put this on her child.

She made the conscious decision to disregard U.S. Immigration Law when she illegally came here. She did so, knowing that someday, it would catch up to her.

Nobody is to blame, but the mother, and then she had 4 more kids here???

This BETTER be waiving flags over at ICE!!!

Sorry....no sympathy on this one....

ChgoWatchdog2, you are 100 percent correct. This won't happen in mexico. They would either put you in jail or DEPORT you.

Greetings all:

This is what makes a story like this interesting and controversial!

1. The mother came here illegally with her daughter...she chose to break the law, her daughter did not.
2.The daughter has a birth certificate from Mexico. The stepfather was able to adopt her because he was married to her mother and her biological father died before she was born.
3. The mother was able to gain citizenship after marrying an American citizen. First she was granted legal residency and then became a naturalized citizen in 2002.
4. No shady deal: stepfathers adopt their wives' children every day of the week.
5. What's heartbreaking is that even though the mother chose to break the law, the 5-year-old girl had no choice.

I don't really have much sympathy for the mother: she seems to have gotten away with breaking the law without any penalties: it's her daughter who's being hung out to dry.

And yes the mother and father had children in this country. They both work, pay taxes and raise their kids in a loving home. What could possibly be illegal about that? She and her husband are both US citizens.

I happen to be a daughter of two immigrants to this country and there's nothing illegal about it. Both my parents came here legally, and even though they never became citizens I certainly am one. And for the record, my parents are totally against illegal immigration: they say the reason they came here is because this is a nation of laws.

I enjoy the input from viewers...and I enjoy tackling difficult stories that will trigger reactions. And I will always try to pre

ok...guess she's gone for the night so here we go.

(These answers correspond to her numbering of issues..)

1. According to the LAW, they were both in the country "illegally".

2. That was a lot of info, but how did he marry an "illegal alien", legally?

3. She had to "lie" to the government at some point to gain legal residency. That act precedes everything, and nulls and voids her citizenship.

4. Of course they do. This however, was a shell game by this family.

5. You're absolutely right. How could any parent do that to their child?

As to your last statement about you and your parents....you were born here. End of argument.

It's still wrong however, to portray Immigration officials as heartless in this. The law, is the law. If they gave into this, they'd be setting a dangerous precedent in this country.

Just as a criminal's conviction can be tossed out of court because the he was not givin his Miranda Rights, everything that happened after she set foot in this country illegally, is "illegal". It doesn't matter if she fooled the government long enough to get married.

Yeah....it's a sad story. But no one is to blame, except her mother.

Lilia, you said your parents came here legally and still are not citizens, acording to the 14th Amendment, Section 5 at least one parent must be an U.S. citizen for a child born here to become a U.S. citizen. So how did you become a citizen of U.S.A. with both of your parents not being citizens of the U.S.A. ? And don't tell me your an anchor baby.

I say deport all the illegals, this is the USA not the UN. These aliens are taking jobs away from us Americans and I'm sick of it.

AMERICAN WILL NOT DO THE JOBS THAT ILLEGALS DO AND ALSO THEY CAN NOT FILE TAXES AT THE END OF THE YEAR AND THE GOVERNMENT IS EATING IT UP

lilia when you talk to the people who write the headlines make sure you make them aware that this young lady was not deported. She went to mexico knowing she had no legal way to get back in. Was she and her parents dumb enough to figure she could sneak back in?

They probably do have a back-up plan but they want to do it the legal way this time.

Good point Fred, but they won't point that out too much. It's not as shocking.

I'm waiting for Slim Coleman and Emma Lozano to try and make another Elvira case out of her.

so I'll try again...
If a parent commits a crime while with their child they should be charged with child endangerment, Including crossing our borders illegally.

After all these years, the parents saw fit to "Protect" The illegal Mother's status, but never bothered to insure the children's!
To me that says that the Mother was only looking out for herself, and used the children as the excuse, just like Elvira!
The laws are what they are...The daughter knew her mother had entered illegally, and therefore had to know that she came illegally as a child.
Ignorance of the law is not a defense! Once the girl turned 18, she should have taken steps to inquire as to her own status! She slipped through the cracks for years and years, and most likely would have continued to do so, if not but a trip she took of her own free will!
SHE WAS NOT DEPORTED! No ONE RAIDED HER HOME AND THREW HER BACK OVER THE BORDER! SHE made A CHOICE to leave the country, and then could not come back home! THIS IS HER OWN RESPONSIBILITY!
AND HER OWN PARENTS FAULT! I feel no sympathy here...If her parents truely cared, they'd have taken steps to protect the kid when she was still a minor!
